Artist Bio: Sonia lives in Darwin with her family, sharing her studio with a couple of cats and a resident bush chook. Her deep love of nature means she spends much of her time exploring the unique Top End, camping, drawing and painting with fellow artists.

Sonia holds a Bachelor of Arts – Fine Art and has participated in multiple group and curated shows across Australia. In 2018, Sonia had her first solo exhibition in Melbourne, followed in 2019 with a solo exhibition at Salon Project Space gallery in Darwin. She featured at The Other Art Fair in Sydney 2019, the same year she was also a Finalist in the Korea-Australian Art Foundation Art Prize. In 2020, Sonia was selected to exhibit in the Melbourne exhibition ‘Exploration 20’ at Flinders Lane Gallery, showcasing ten emerging Australian artists. 2021 has seen Sonia’s work selected as a finalist in both the Lethbridge Landscape Prize and the 20000 Small Scale Art Awards in Brisbane.

Living in the verdant Top End and armed with the belief that all living things are connected by the habitats we share, Sonia’s work aims to capture the Territory’s precious wildness, documenting its wealth of colour, shape, spirit, and mood. She pays homage to the fertile environments that are under constant threat as well as observing how radically we alter these habitats to create our own urban landscapes. Her work on plywood panels is known for its intricate hand cut edges, but Sonia’s practice also includes works on paper, mostly completed in gouache. Currently available are the limited edition archival reproduction prints from her Monsoon Musings, a series of gouache paintings on Bristol paper.
